Michael Stadler is the Head of the Computational Biology at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research in Basel. The group closely collaborates with experimental biologists to study the molecular and phenotypic changes that can be observed during differentiation, such as during in vitro ES cell to neuron development, during spermatogenesis or during progression of breast cancer to metastatic disease. We are developing tools and approaches for the computational analysis of genome wide datasets including ChIP-seq, RNA-seq and DNA methylation data. Using statistical methods, we aim to better understand how the different layers of epigenetic, transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation interact and contribute to the control of gene expression. As a far goal, we try to improve our understanding of how genotype defines phenotype, and how cells with identical genomes can give rise to such variable phenotypes.
